Angora History - Turkish Angora
One of the most ancient of cat breeds, originating in Turkey, the Angora was the first of the longhaired cats to reach Europe. In the sixteenth century, they were described as “ash coloured dun and speckled cats, beautiful to behold”. The cats were bred from, and some kittens went to England, where they were known as French cats. When another type of long coated cat arrived in Europe from Persia (now Iran), the Angora and the Persian were inter-mated quite indiscriminately. The Persian type gradually superseded the Angora type in popularity, and by the twentieth century the Angora breed was virtually unknown outside its native land.

One of the oldest natural breeds of North America, the Maine Coon or Maine Cat, has been known as a true variety for more than a hundred years. As its name implies, it originated in the state on Maine. At one time it was thought that the cat was the product of matings between semi-wild domestic cats and racoons, hence the name “coon”, though this is now known to be a biological impossibility.

Ragdoll Origins - Ragdoll
The Ragdoll originated in California, and it remains rare outside the United States. The first Ragdoll cats were bred by an American Anne Baker, whose white longhaired cat, Josephine, was involved in a road accident which left her with permanent injuries. When Josephine eventually had kittens, they were found to have particularly placid temperaments and would completely relax when picked up and cuddled, reminiscent of a ragdoll.
