Behaviour
Behaviour
A Bundle Of Fury - General
The cat will not rush headlong into situations without first taking stock, it is not a timid creature. Unlike the dog, which will usually rush off in the face of danger, the cat will stand its ground. By arching its back to make itself look bigger than it really is, snarling, hissing, and spitting, it looks a formidable opponent. Most dogs will not stay to face such a bundle of fury.

Health
Health
Abscess - General
An abscess may develop after a fight with another cat, and is caused by a puncture of the skin that is so small that it passes unnoticed until the cat looks miserable and goes off his food. Close examination will reveal a hard, shining swelling, which gradually grows larger. This is filled with pus and may have to be brought to a head with thrice-daily hot water fomentations, hot but not boiling. Professional treatment is recommended as the vet may consider antibiotic injections necessary. The fur should be cut short around the swelling, and lancing may be needed with a sterilized needle when the swelling has come to a head. Once the pus is out, the cat will be in much less pain and should start eating again. Washing the wound with salt water washes will aid with healing. The wound should not be allowed to close up too quickly as the abscess may redevelop.

When another type of long coated cat arrived in Europe from Persia (now Iran), the Angora and the Persian were inter-mated quite indiscriminately. The Persian type gradually superseded the Angora type in popularity, and by the twentieth century the Angora breed was virtually unknown outside its native land.

Behaviour
Apartment Living - General
Cats appreciate a garden, but many live happily in apartments and get sufficient exercise from chasing a ball around. They all love sleeping in the sun and if there is a small balcony suitable for this it should be wired in, if high up, as cats do not always land on their feet as commonly supposed, and a fall from a height may result in death or a broken limb. If there is no balcony, a small wire frame could be made to fit the window exactly, so that it may be left open in suitable weather.

Bringing Your New Kitten Home - General
Bringing Your New Kitten Home On arriving at his new home the kitten should be put in a room with the windows closed and the fireplace and chimney covered (if there is one), as these days of central heating he may never have seen a fire and may consider the chimney a means of escape- with disastrous results. A litter tray should be ready, as he may need to use it after his journey. It should be low enough for the kitten to get into and out with ease, and should be filled with cat litter. It is advisable to change the contents frequently as cats are fastidious animals, refusing to use smelly trays. It should always be kept in the same spot, so that the kitten knows where to go. If a garden is available, he could be taken out there under guard once he has settled in. When he first arrives he may be nervous and a little miserable in strange surroundings, missing his mother and his little brothers and sisters. He should be allowed to wander around the room as he pleases, and should not be fussed over unduly.

It isn't true to say that cats can see in the dark but they can see better than most mammals in a dim light. The cat is a nocturnal animal so its eyes are adapted for hunting by moonlight. Many animals that are about when we are asleep can increase the amount of light passing into the retina because they have a reflecting layer behind. One of the reasons the Ancient Egyptians regarded the cat as sacred was because they thought their eyes refected the sun while it was hidden from man.

Choosing A Kitten - General
When checking over the kitten you choose, examine the fur carefully. It should be clean and fresh-looking, without any signs of parasitic infection or fungus disease. There should be no scabs or scratches on the skin, or any of the tiny grits which are excreted by cat fleas. Check inside the ears, they should be clean and sweet smelling with a slightly moist apearance. Again, dark grits indicate the presence of parasites, this time of tiny mites which infest the inner ear canals. Check the area under the tail, it should look clean and tidy with no yellow staining to indicate diarrhoea. The kittens eyes should be bright and clear, the third eyelids should not protrude at the inner corners, and there should be no sign of any soreness or discharge. The nostrils, too, should be clean and dry. The young kitten should be playful unless you call during cat nap time, the kitten should move properly in a co-ordinated manner. Although its body should feel firm, the stomach should not be distended as this could indicate infestations with intestinal worms. If your new kitten has not had its injections, you must arrange with a veterinary surgeon to take care of these without further delay. Provide your kitten or kittens with plenty of toys, warmth, a good diet, fed in four small daily meals, and your pet will grow strong and healthy in leaps and bounds.

Feline Infectious Enteritis Or Panleucopenia - General
Feline infectious enteritis or panleucopenia is a killer, invariably proving fatal once it has been contracted. It need not be, as inoculations are available which give practically one hundred percent protection. Several vaccines are available, usually given in the form of two injections, but your vet will advise as to the best one, and the right age at which it should be given, usually when the kitten is about ten weeks old. Feline infectious enteritis can kill in a matter of hours, with poisen being blamed rather than illness. The symptoms are generally a high fever, loss of appetite, slight vomiting, general lassitude and dehydration. The kitten may sit with its head over a bowl of water without drinking, or may crouch in a dark corner uninterested in anything. The cat should be taken to a vet for immediate treatment. The virus is so violent that no new kitten should be introduced into a home where the illness has been for at least six months afterwards. The new cat should have been inoculated at least three or four weeks before bringing into the infected house. The house should have been thoroughly disinfected, and the cats blankets, basket, and toys destroyed.

The patient should be isolated in a warm but not overheated room, and a comfortable bed to sleep on, which depending on the cats illness may need to be destroyed when the cat has recovered. The sick kitten or cat should not be left alone for long, and frequently visited and talked to lovingly and cheerfully. The washing of hands for people in contact with a sick cat is vital, even changing of clothes may be required. To make the cat feel more comfortable any mucus from the nose should be wiped away, and the areas around the mouth and under the tail washed gently with a dampened cloth or cotton wool. The cat when getting better should be given its favourite food to get it eating again. In some illnesses the sense of smell and taste may be lost, so something with a strong flavour can be given.

Pneumonitis Or Cat Flue Or Distemper - General
The cat flue is a most serious illness, it can cause death but it responds to early treatment with antibiotics. The symptoms are runny eyes and nose, sneezing, wheezing, possibly diarrhoea, high temperature and refusal of food. The illness may be long and recovery slow, but careful nursing and a nourishing diet should effect a complete cure. If necessary, the animal may have to be given injectons and be force fed to keep it alive. A small quantity of glucose dissolved in warm water and given on the side of the mouth with a medicine dropper may help to keep the cat going. Some vets vaccinate against pneumonitis but, as the illness is known in so many forms it may be difficult to find the correct vaccine.

Fleas act as the intermediary host to the tape worm, so if there are fleas in its coat a cat may also suffer from tape worm. As the head attaches itself to the intestine, with the body growing up to several feet in length, it is essential that the correct medicine is prescribed by the vet and given to ensure the whole worm is expelled without doing internal damage. It is still important to groom your cat everyday, as it is very good for preventing matting and they love it!
